Assisi Province is one of the five provinces of School Sisters of St. Francis. “Our Mission is to witness to the Good News of Jesus and presence of the reign of God as we enter into the lives and needs of people, especially the poor… Our focus is giving, healing and defending LIFE” (RIP x11). At present we there are 72 Sisters with full membership and 22 Sisters with temporary profession, 10 Postulants and 4 Aspirants in the Province. The beginning of the history of Assisi Province in India goes back to 1963 when the European Province started their venture of receiving vocations from India. This year 12 young Indian women joined the community at Erlenbad in Germany. They continued receiving vocations from India in the following three years. The Sisters who received religious and professional training in Germany worked there for 15 to 25 years. After Vatican 11, Sisters in Germany started thinking of starting missions in India and sent four Indian Sisters, Sister Paulita Chandy, Sister Stella Maria Kundukulam, Sister Elsy Mukkatukarakkaran and Sister Marlin Arimpoor to India. With the assistance of Bishop Joseph Kundukulam, Bishop of Trichur and Bishop Joseph Irimpen, Bishop of Palakkad, they started the first house at Kanjikode in Kerala on 18th February 1977. Four other Sisters were already sent to Madhya Pradesh in 1975. Both these communities grew in course of time and became independent provinces. The Sisters in the North became a province in 1996 and South India became a Province in 2000. Until they become two separate provinces, they functioned as a region of German Province. The services of the leaderships of German Province during these years are unforgettable. Sisters Muther Archangala, Sister Benedicta Beha, Sister Carina, Sister Petra Kraus and Sister Magdalena and their team members are to be remembered ever in the history of Assisi Province. The service of Sister Marie Lourdes as regional coordinator and the guidance of Sister Paulita and Sister Lilia Maria as Unit Superiors are also to be remembered in the history of Assisi Province. Thus Assisi Province grows on the shoulders of others and spread out to different parts of Kerala, Tamilnadu and Karnataka, three of South Indian Provinces. |
